No body ever mentions the fact that such asteroids do not necessarily have to hit us to hurt us. The gravitational tug of one large enough or close enough or striking the moon would disturb the harmonious relation between the Earth and moon. All hell will break loose when that happens.
As they say, its not if, but rather When!
